Ted
Danforth – Soon after his first 3-day kayak-camping
tour, Ted came to realize that he wanted to change direction and
refocus his career to better align with his interests and his
true ambition. He has always believed that true satisfaction comes
from living and working in what you are passionate about. Ted
worked for over 25 years managing his own environmental engineering
business before his entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch Hidden
River Outfitters (HRO). This new direction offered an opportunity
to focus his long-held passion of working and playing in the outdoors
and sharing his sense of place with others through sea kayaking.
Ted has always had a perspective and appreciation of the natural
world that most of us never realize.
Ted's outdoor spirit is contagious and inspiring when he recounts
his solo explorations that have brought clarity to life’s
difficult decisions, or the many trips he's shared with one or
both of his sons - cross-country skiing in Vermont, backpacking
in the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania or sea kayaking in Maine.
In addition to sea kayaking, Ted's interests include fly fishing,
biking in charity rides, running, telemark skiing, writing, inspirational
reading, camp gourmet cooking, leave-no-trace camping, and teaching
his dog Woody to swim (and eventually kayak!). He also serves
on the board of the Schuylkill Greenway Association. Ted holds
an MBA from St. Joseph's University and Engineering degrees from
Penn State University and Florida Institute of Technology.
Andrea Stevens – Andrea is a partner in
Hidden River Outfitters and specializes in the development of
our educational programs with an eye towards sharing her knowledge
of the local flora and fauna and their natural habitats. Andrea
is an avid kayaker whose heart lies in the coastal waters of New
England, but loves exposing others (especially kids) to the outdoors
and time on the water anywhere she can. Andrea holds a doctorate
in plant ecology.
Mike Fernandez - Mike started his boating career
at a young age on the twisting streams of the Pine Barrens, and soon moved to whitewater canoeing and kayaking. Through college, provided boating instruction
to YMCA summer camps and paddled throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Although other activities pulled him away
from paddling, the discovery of sea kayaking has re-kindled his
love of boating, and he enjoys introducing it to others as a means
of exploring the world around them.
Jason
Mifflin - From homemade rafts to sea kayaks, Jason loves
to be on the water in anything that floats. He spent much of his
life paddling a canoe until he discovered kayaking about four
years ago. He appreciates both whitewater and flatwater kayaking
for their respective exhilarating and relaxing qualities. Jason
enjoys sharing his passion of being outdoors with others and reconnecting
people with the rivers they often appreciate but never experience.
Jason loves to get folks out on the water, regardless of their
experience and expose them to paddling. Also, as a native of Philadelphia,
he enjoys recounting the history and function of many of the areas
that we encounter on our tours.
Jocelyn Grover - Coming from a family of renowned outdoor guides on the Eastern Shore, it is no surprise that Jocelyn is comfortable and relaxed on the water. She has been lucky enough to have paddled the rivers of many states as well as the coastal waters of Canada and Bermuda since learning to kayak twelve years ago. Off the river, Jocelyn is an avid reader, amateur photographer and pretty good cook. Believing that there is no such thing as a bad day when you have the chance to be on the water, she loves to share her delight in paddling with everyone.
