TUNE-UP SESSIONS
Skills Tune-up Course
June 23, 2009
This course will review the basic skills associated with safely kayaking at an introductory level. Included will be a review of the following:
- Discussion of Wind, Weather and Waves
- Necessary equipment and alternatives (kayaks, paddles, PFDs, etc…)
- Lifting, Carrying and Transporting a kayak
- Getting in and out on the water w/o ending up in the water
- Basic Strokes and techniques
- Demonstrated Rescues (Self and Assisted)
- Discussion of kayak touring/tripping.
Depending on the size of the group and experience levels, the above activities will be modified to stress the interest of the group and individuals. Program begins promptly at 5pm. Bring your own boat and gear or rent one from us. We will have a variety of boats and paddles available if you would like to try something different!

Strokes Tune-up Course

Having trouble remembering how to do a bow rudder or getting the kayak to move sideways the way you want it to? This course will review the basic strokes and some maneuvers to get the boat to go where you want it to go. Strokes to be covered and practiced include:
- Forward Stroke – Power and Touring
- Sweep/Turning Stroke
- Edging the Kayak to enhance performance
- Bow and Stern Rudder
- Draw Strokes (Sculling, In water and Out of water recovery)
- High and Low Braces
- Reverse Strokes
Depending on the size of the group and experience levels, we will also practice linking some of the above strokes to aid in performance and efficiency. We will be using the American Canoe Association’s “Coastal Kayaking Strokes and Maneuvers Refinement” course as a basis for this session. Program begins promptly at 5pm. Bring your own boat and gear or rent one from us. We will have a variety of boats and paddles available if you would like to try something different! Cost $25
